Who are we?

Wilderness contracting is a small, family owned construction business based in Ironwood, Michigan. Our company is owned and operated by Joe Dykstra and family. We've been working in the Ironwood area since 2016.

What's our background?

Our company began in 2022 as a small excavation business. Before starting our business we worked on the road for 5 years doing dirt work work for top-tier mountain biking trails. Before joining the dirt work industry Joe worked as a carpenter on a wide array of projects.

What services do we offer?

Custom Saunas

At Wilderness Contracting we love saunas! From the simple to the complex our team is ready to assist you with design and construction of your dream sauna. We focus on constructing indoor saunas during the winter and stand alone exterior saunas in the summer.

Excavation

We love doing anything excavation related, especially challenging and detailed projects. Anything "small" excavation we do it: site preparation, land clearing, landscaping, driveways, hardscaping, recreational trails, retaining walls, demolition, and much more!

New Construction Carpentry

Carpentry is a rapidly growing part of our business. During the snow-free months we do residential new construction (especially garages), siding (mostly DiamondKote and LP SmartSide products, and more. If we don't do it, we will do our best to connect you with someone who does.

Remodels

In the winter we focus on bathroom and kitchen remodels. But, we do lots of room and basement remodels as well.

When it comes to construction we pride ourselves on doing high-quality work that meets our customer's needs.

Here's an example:

As our business began to grow we received many requests to do drywall projects in homes that were currently occupied. In many of these homes dust management was a high priority. We found that many homes had unique project requirements which made it impossible to control the spread of drywall dust with standard methods such as sealing off construction areas with temporary barriers.

What was our solution?

We invested in a top-of-the-line sander and dust extraction system which allows our drywall repairs and installation to leave as little dust as possible. In many instances this completely eliminated the need for creating temporary dust enclosures. It also allowed us to offer a better value to our customers by saving a significant amount of time putting the finishing touches on our drywall.

The bottom line: We are a construction business who invests in you.

How do we approach your remodel project?

We prioritize approaching your remodel project with a whole-system mindset.

In the bathroom remodel project featured above, the customer had multiple needs:

Her existing tub/shower system was inconvenient to use. We recommended a low profile shower pan to better meet her needs.
Her previous remodeler had routed the pipes for the bathroom up an exterior wall. The pipes had frozen multiple times and eventually bust, ruining her kitchen ceiling. We recommended rerouting the water and drain lines as a part of the kitchen ceiling repair to stop this problem from reoccurring in the future.
Her exterior wall had unusual niches formed as a result of the previous pipe alignment. We straightened out this wall as a part of our renovations to make the bathroom easier to clean and more aesthetically appealing.
